It Started With A Bushel

 My mother went shopping.
You have to understand that my mother only shops with a distinct purpose.
It's a Mission. An Undertaking. An Operation.
I ended up with this.
My very own bushel of #2 Jonathan Apples.

This Tasty Thursday, were you here, you would find me immersed in making Apple Pie Filling.
By the jar fulls.
This is batch #1, 6 pints. I was only trying 1/2 the recipe here.
The quart jars were not sanitized yet.
I need to let you in on a little dilemma I had during the planning stage.
This particular issue of The Ball Blue Book, every canning person's Bible, did not print the 'how' to can Apple Pie Filling. Every other variety of apple this and apple that, but No Pie Filling.
Hmph!

But Mother came to the rescue by calling on Aunt Maybelle.
If you've read any of my other blogs,
Aunt Maybelle has her own tag.
She should be at the top of Google listings under Aunt Maybelle.
Yes.
She had the recipe.
So now the little project I had planned for her had definitely better be ready for Christmas :)
So does anyone else out there have an Aunt Maybelle?
You know, the aunt who is the coolest??

But I venture to say,
Aunt Maybelle learned some of her coolness from my mother.
After all, it started with a bushel.

The Art of the Note Tuck/ Tasty Thursday

I was beeboppin' along last weekend stuffing pickles in jars from our garden.........
I'm not known for a prettily packed jar of pickles just for the record.

Had them in the boiling water bath to seal up........

They did turn out pretty after all.

Sweet Pickles. Ready to eat in 4 to 6 weeks.

And in the midst of all that canning, I found a little gem of a note, tucked away for a future smile.
Translation: "I believe in you Santa, but my friend Dunken does not."
Dunken, you are pretty well on the Coal list for Christmas.
Sorry guy!
Dedicating this Tasty Thursday to my youngest daughter :)

In Season/Tasty Thursday

It starts with this. First there's a couple cucumbers on the vines. Next thing you know, you have the market cornered with a bountiful harvest of these vegies. So what to do? Use this as a Tasty Thursday post!

Yes, I've made these and that is the reason I'm confident it's a very tasty recipe. Around here we
"Put Up" for the year; can it, preserve it, whatever you want to call it.
And my cupboards are bare of this particular pickle.
So it's time.

This weekend will be a busy one, but well worth the effort.
Thanks Aunt Juanita!

Peter Piper

When Peter Piper picked his peck of pickled peppers, I wonder if he was experiencing a drought and that's all that was abundant that year too???
Here's my banana peppers about to be pickled.
It takes a gallon plus a few extra green peppers to add a splash of color.
I didn't actually have a gallon of peppers this time, so ended up with 3 pints.
I'm ok with that.
Been busy at Mom's too making Jams.
This is the way raspberry looks waiting for the 'boil'.
Time's almost up.....
(aren't they a pretty color?)
This my friends is our afternoon's results. We have gooseberry jam as well as raspberry.
Notice we have a little sample jar for taste testing.
Afterall, in Missouri you must "Show Me" it's good.

A Taste of Summer

There's a recipe from my Grandma Hunter that we Love, Love, Love around here.
You won't find it here........
It takes 3 days to prepare before you can preserve it with canning.
When you have 10 children runnin' around your house 5 of those days, you must be creative with your time.
Only 10 minutes left (unless you use Quart-size jars. Then it's 15)
In case you hadn't guessed, what we have here are Lime Pickles. Thanks to my mother for sharing her abundance of cucumbers! And again thanks to my Grandma for passing down her recipe for me to share with my younger generation. It is most definitely a keeper. :)
Oh! and by the way, grandma's in that pic you see up above in my blog heading !! Maybe I got my time creativeness from her??
